If you have a travel rewards card, the holiday shopping season can be a great time to rack up some extra points. While the holidays are about giving, there’s no shame in using your travel rewards cards to earn a little something for yourself along the way. After all, who doesn’t need a vacation once the holiday season has passed?

Whether you’re dreaming of a beach getaway to get you through the dark days of winter after the first of the year or are already planning a family vacation over the summer, be sure you’re making the most of your travel rewards card this holiday season.

Here are 5 quick tips to help you maximize your rewards points this holiday season.

Use your rewards program shopping portal

Many rewards programs offer shopping portals which will give you bonus points for making your online purchase through their portal. If you’re shopping online anyways, see if your rewards program offers bonus points for shopping through their portal.

If you’re making an online purchase anyways, it’s absolutely worth the couple of extra clicks to shop through your rewards program’s portal if it will earn you bonus points.

Use a card that will earn maximum points

Some rewards cards will give you bonus points on certain categories of spending, such as at gas stations (perfect for filling up on the way to grandma’s house) or restaurants (use this card to pick up the tab for that celebratory holiday dinner out).

Be sure to know which card will earn you the maximum amount of reward points where and use it accordingly over the holiday season.

Get that sign-up bonus quicker

The holiday season is a great time to sign up for a new rewards card and get that sign up bonus in no time. Many cards require you to spend a certain amount of money within a specific time frame to earn a sign-up bonus. If you know you’ll be making more purchases than normal around the holidays anyway, that makes it a great time to work towards a sign-up bonus as you’ll get there quicker than normal.

Add an authorized user

If you share expenses with someone, or trust them enough to pay you back for whatever they spend, add this person as an authorized user to earn points for their swipes as well.

If your partner rarely makes purchases except at the holidays, now is a great time to add them as an authorized user to be sure you’re earning points for their gift purchases as well.

Think outside the box

Sometimes, thinking creatively can help you maximize your rewards. Do you have a rewards card that offers you bonus points at gas stations? Run inside the next time you fill up and check out the gas station’s gift card selection. If you can purchase gift cards, for yourself or others, and earn bonus points for doing so, you’d be missing out on a huge opportunity by not!

There’s other ways to think creatively as well. Offer to pick up the tab at dinner with friends instead of making the server split it up, or be the one to purchase the Christmas gift for a relative several of you are going in on together, and ask everyone to pay you back while you enjoy the extra points for making the large purchase.

Did you hire a babysitter for New Year’s Eve? Ask if you can pay them via a payment app, connected to your rewards card. They’ll probably be glad to have the money go right into their account, and not only can you skip trying to remember to stop at the ATM but you also get rewards points for paying the sitter.

Getting creative and thinking about if it’s possible to earn points, or earn more points, before spending any money can definitely pay off over time, especially over the holiday shopping season!
